Chicago is pretty tops when it comes to downtowns - having been to every downtown on the list multiple times. The city is obsessed with being clean and given around 1,000,000 people downtown every day especially during summer it's very safe.

You know Downtown Chicago is not as dynamic or clean as Downtown San Jose. Let me know what you really think about Downtown SJ since you have been there recently.

While it was safe, I didn't feel safe in downtown Minneapolis at all, particularly at night. My vote for for San Diego. To be fair, I've only been to four cities on this list.

Yes, what you read is fake news.

I live in Chicago (native born and raised) and I work downtown. The city is kept very clean for the most part and downtown is very clean and safe. I sometimes work at night or overnight. I take public transportation. I walk the streets of downtown late at night and in the wee hours of the morning many days a week. I have never felt unsafe and I am female.

The city is kept clean on a regular basis and we are not all dodging bullets as the media would have you believe. You must have never been to Chicago for you to even make that statement.

You could use the term "fake news" or you could try "ignorance".

Chicago gets my vote.

I notice on social media that the people who talk the most trash about Chicago are not from here and have never been here. I can tell by their ignorant comments that they have never set foot in Chicago.

I assume this is sarcasm? I don't understand the meaning of posting that...

As someone who has lived in Chicago and currently lives in Minneapolis, I can say they both are clean and safe for the most part. However, Minneapolis feels really sketchy along Hennepin Ave, which is the nightlife/restaurant strip downtown. There are drugs openly being sold and many young trouble makers hanging out(even with a huge police presence!). I frequent Hennepin quite often for nightlife and I don't walk around in fear, but I'm aware of what's going around me. On rare occasions, people shoot after the bars and clubs close, but overall Minneapolis feels rather safe, just not as safe as downtown Chicago.

Regarding Minneapolis, its really only an issue at night, specifically weekend nights during warm weather. Huge police presence does help a lot, but it does feel sketchy at times.
