Corrected...

Highly Southern:
Birmingham
Memphis
New Orleans
Nashville

More Southern than Not:
Richmond
Charlotte
Louisville
Raleigh
Jacksonville
Hampton Roads

Not Southern:
Austin
San Antonio
I agree with this list. I'm not sure how you put Hampton Roads as one of the most southern places then place Jacksonville in the least southern category.

in some ways, this is a tough poll because the South is often portrayed by and associated with its small towns, not its cities.

Southern is a way of life. It’s about the accents. It’s about food. It’s about the culture. It’s about the style. It’s about the architecture. It’s about the music: blues, zydeco, southern rap, country, etc. It’s about the landscape.

The Deep South is the epicenter of the south, and then areas outside of the Deep South, lose a layer of southern until it fades out into other regions. This is my take on it.

I can agree with that but there's not even a consensus on what constitutes the Deep South outside of Mississippi.

What in the world is the "Azalea Coast of NC"? You're the only person I've ever seen use this term.

There's also an argument to be made that north GA, north AL, and northwest SC (the Upstate) are excluded from the Deep South based on the same logic you only include portions of NC, FL, TN, and AR. I also think east TX can reasonably be included but you're entirely too dogmatic about Texas not even being a Southern state so I won't debate that with you.

Yes, North GA, North AL, and NW SC may not be Deep South, but since the super-majority of each state is the Deep South, I decided it is best to list the entire states.

I only included portions of states when the super-majority of the state is definitely not Deep South.
