I’m looking to move from the Midwest. I’m a 24 year-old male working in Human Resources. I like going out to restaurants, bars, nightclubs (occasionally), shopping malls, walking around downtown, enjoying the outdoors, and meeting friendly people. I like mild/warm days and cool nights. Which city sounds like it would be a better fit for me?
I think all three might be places of interest. Have you visited each? If not, try and do that. You don't give a whole lot of information of what you are looking for, so it is hard to give a strong opinion here. "Friendly" is subjective.
Seattle is the strongest economy and fastest growing. Portland is the more eclectic and has a more interesting and cozy downtown area, and Denver offers a very cool vibe with a vibrant downtown.
Weather is essentially the same in Seattle and Portland, though Portland can get a bit hotter in summer, and a bit colder in winter with occasional ice storms. Denver's weather is unlike almost any area in the country. Extreme swings during much of the year, especially winter. 70 to 25 in one day is not abnormal. Denver is also sunnier overall than Seattle and Portland, but is also the snowiest of the three.
How much money are you looking to make? Of the three, Seattle housing is the most outrageously priced, followed by Denver, then Portland. Portland is the least corporate. Seattle and Portland have major homeless problems. Portland is easiest to traverse, having the most extensive public rail system and Seattle's traffic is the worse given its watery boundaries.
I've heard from a dating perspective, Seattle is the worst for men given that Tech jobs are prevalent and men dominate that industry. Seattle is nice because its midway between Portland and Vancouver, British Columbia for weekend getaways. DEFINITELY see British Columbia, wherever you move!
Portland is the most overrated city in the US. It's perfect if you're white and follow the herd mentality though. Denver is meh, but if you're into mountain activity and more wintry weather, then it's for you. Overall, I don't find very appealing. Seattle has lost its soul and has become a bit generic and expensive. However, I still like it more than the other two.
Best to check out which of the three has the greatest job opportunities in your field. Having lived in Portland for many years I can tell you they aren't that great but you need to make some inquiries in all three because you need to be able to afford to do the things you like to do besides eating and paying rent.
Another thing to keep in mind is Washington has no State Income Tax. Oregon has no Sales Tax. Colorado has both an Income AND Sales tax. Of course there are nuances with this, depending on your personal situation.
