Apparently this is based on cell phone movement data. Ad with all rankings, take this with a grain of salt.

You can search counties as well:

New Mexico is doing very good at social distancing and was one of the first states to put in place those measures. I don't trust this ranking. Some states with good grades still don't even have official stay-at-home orders in effect.

I'm fully in support of social distancing and have been practicing this well before local directives were issued.

That said, these grades may be largely reflecting where there is already a large volume of COVID-19 cases, rather than meaningful predictions of where new cases will arise in the future. Some of the states earning 'A' grades are experiencing, or have already gone through, major and extremely alarming impacts from the pandemic.

People will often adjust their behavior when others whom they know well are visibly impacted. Unfortunately the pandemic is probably on its way to most communities around the US, even though some locations may have it easier than others.

It boggles the mind what some states aren't doing. The god damn time to slow this thing is before cases get prolific.

How does Wyoming get an F? Don't people there already live miles apart from each other?

New York an "A"? LOL!!!!! Mayor De Blasio told citizens as late as March 11 to go about their daily lives as usual. He didn't stop subway service, which is the polar opposite of social distancing. Even though NYC is overly dependent on rapid transit, this is totally irresponsible. Now they have, by far and even per capita, the highest infection rate in the nation. Just by virtue of NY getting an "A" renders this list completely useless. Some states on here are doing great jobs yet have low grades and others (like NY) aren't being responsible yet getting high grades. Don't believe everything you read, people lol, smh.

If only it were that simple. For example the subway is necessary for "essential workers" to get to work. Further, with a small fraction of the regular commuters, people can space themselves much farther apart.

This stuff isn't figured out off the cuff. Actual thought goes into it, at least in the states that are acting responsibly. New York seems to be getting their increases under some control, at least vs. a lot of places.

I'd say Texas has done a phenomenal job of containing COVID-19 WITHOUT having to issue to many lockdowns for too long.

The per capita cases there are quite low--impressive for the second most populous state. And boy, they reacted quick! They shut down even most MUSEUMS Saturday, 3/14, likely before many museums in California shut down!

Iowa got a D because the governor didn't officially close schools.

Literally every educational institution in this state has been closed since the middle of March.
