Honestly, the stratification of wealth in Middlesex is pretty similar to Fairfield. Weston (a town in Middlesex County) is the wealthiest place in MA by per-capita income. Lowell (a city in Middlesex County) is 337th of 351 places in MA in terms of per-capita income. Springfield is 350th, fwiw, only ahead of Lawrence per Wiki.

Now
another unique city Stamford, the biggest GDP sized city in CT, the closest should be Jersey City, NJ, not sure any MA city is similar to that.
Well Boston clearly has a much higher GDP than Stamford or Jersey City. I’d imagine that Cambridge has a higher one than at least Stamford if not JC. Can’t find any good sources one way or the other, though.

Actually, it's not. Marblehead, MA, which is located in neighboring Essex County, was the tenth most populous city in America at the time of the first U.S. census in 1790.

Well, yeah, but 1790 was a long time ago. Lowell is the biggest city in America’s 13th most productive county in 2020 (or at least in 2015).
