I get that, but we're still talking about several states and Boston is comparable to Atlanta (smaller MSA, larger GDP) which is a de facto regional capital of a larger geographic region.
Boston is a big deal for multiple reasons, but the number of New England states and the size of the region aren’t among of them imo.
States just kept getting bigger and bigger as we moved west. It’d be kind of funny if the government broke the country up into Rhode Island -sized chunks in 2020. Los Angeles County would have to become at least 3 separate states...

You're misrepresenting what I said, which is that some of Boston's importance derives from its status as a regional capital--even if, as you pointed out, that region is relatively small. We can agree to disagree on this point as it's not that big of a deal.

Reading this thread just confirms the prevailing notion of City Data forum: in the real world of urban geography, urban psychology, informed data collection and analysis, and travel, too many posters here would get laughed out of the building.
That Miami doesn’t have an overwhelming advantage on this poll and didn’t qualify for the top 10 and that Austin is being relegated to 3rd or 4th tier status and being compared with the likes of Albuquerque and Tulsa is an absolute denigration to the respective cities and an embarrassment to the posters.

Really Austin is a 25-35 city with its peers being

This is getting ridiculous. The hate for Austin is absurd on this site. On the first list, only Tampa and maybe Las Vegas and New Orleans should be listed. The others are a rung below and belong with most of the cities on the second list.
As far as the second list is concerned, OKC, Little Rock, Jacksonville, Memphis, Tulsa, and Albuquerque are EASILY a tier below and should be on a separate rung lower.

I agree with you concerning Austin but not so much regarding Miami for real world reasons I mentioned earlier in the thread.
