70k would do the best in Boise. In Seattle you would have trouble just paying the rent, but that may be changing with the current turmoil. Anchorage has been in a recession for a couple of years now and there does not seem to be a quick fix up there.

I recently looked up some houses on zillow and noticed this too. The cost of the average house in Boise is about 300k, just as much as Phoenix. Which is surprising as Boise doesn't have as much to offer, and probably doesn't have as many high paying jobs as Phoenix.
