Dallas and LA tier one but not chicago and philly lol. Dallas, really????
Listing them in order is very subjective but there is no way imo that LA isn’t top tier. Not number 1 and maybe not 2 or 3 but it’s top tier. Maybe LA doesn’t have the best fan base in every sport but no city does. The objective criteria posted in this thread (attendance, number of events) clearly show that LA holds its own.

LA is definitely 1 or 2 with New York. Every metric, maybe outside of "loyal fanbase" (which isn't even apart of OP's criteria) has LA and NY at the top 2 spots.

Could be that I missed it, but was any data ever presented that showed a "loyal fanbase" deficit for Los Angeles in relation to other cities?
Or is that just another one of those vague "well you know so many transplants there" assumptions (because NYC doesn't have a lot of transplants).

I mean the Kings are in the bottom half of attendance, and the Rams get run out of their own stadium.
But I think LA absolutely has very loyal, and passionate NBA and MLB fans. Historical franchises that are amongst the most valued in sports. Which is why I firmly have it in my top 5.

So then you didn't go by the OP criteria either, apparently.
I would still have it in the top 3 even with zero local fans just for event hosting ability.

As are the Blackhawks, Flyers, and two-thirds of the NYC area teams.

The Rams are 6th in attendance. I don't know the stats on opposing fan ticket sales but it makes sense that a city without a team for 3 decades would have fans of other teams. Especially in a sports capital. Either way the fans are there.

I’m not disputing either point.
But right wrong or indifferent, LA not having a football team was a major gap to me. And now that they finally have one, I’d expect fandom to slowly pick up. But as of now, rams games are like home games for the visitor.
The latter is not an indictment on LA or its fans. But it’s worth noting.
One thing that hasn’t been brought up is sports radio rankings and market share. In cities like NYC, Boston, Philly, Chicago, this is big stuff. It’s a pseudo-gauge on how involved an area is day in and day out.
Since the departure of Francesa and Russo on New York’s WFAN, Boston’s 98.5 The Sports Hub lead by Felger and Mazz has dominated the National Barret Rankings. Felger and Mazz float between a 20-25% local market share. I believe those Nielsen ratings mean 1/4 or 1/5 of all radio listeners are tuned into Felger and Mazz sports talk. That’s insane given the fact that 98.5 isn’t the only sports talk station locally. In fact, the simulcasts viewership for Felger and Mazz often outdo popular TV shows. Meaning, more households in Boston are watching them talk sports than nearly anything else on TV late afternoons and early evening.
I know they are widely considered the industry standard now. I’d have to look at the other cities most popular shows/personalities to understand Nielsen ratings. But that’s one thing I know from living in Boston and then elsewhere… It’s a religion there.
