1. Miami, FL (god awful people)
2. Detroit, MI (feel bad for this city, but wouldn't want to live there)
3. New Orleans, LA (crime)
4. Bakersfield, CA (depressing)

I am not fond of Indianapolis myself, it is a very plain city, and overall just a dump. The neighborhoods have no character and it is overall just depressing and boring IMO. Others may disagree, as I am sure you do because it is your hometown.
maybe if you went more than 5 steps beyond your front porch you would discover something. If you want to see a dump, go to Detroit or Baltimore. Indy cant be too depressing or boring since it will be home to the Super Bowl in 2012. Indy has come a very very very long way since I grew up there in the 80s. And many Indy neighborhoods have plenty of character. Consider yourself more enlightened. Next time know what you are talking about B4 posting.
This thread is funny. Most of the cities people hate happen to be in the states in which most Americans would like to live in and are moving to. Maybe people list certain cities because of jealousy?

The thread isn't the 5 cities that nobody wants to live in -- it's the 5 least FAVORITE cities, so all cities will have some good stuff and bad stuff that people like or don't like about them, there are just a few that people feel are particularly less competitive vs. the rest of the U.S. I'm sure there is less of a "jealousy" factor and more of a competitive factor if someone seems to be hating on a relatively popular city (e.g. Houston, Phoenix, Atlanta, LA, etc.).

Assuming you're talking about the sunbelt, the sunbelt is where the jobs and opportunities are (were(before the recession)?), therefore they experience high growth. That doesn't necessarily the people will enjoy these cities by any means. They are used to a completely different environment, and going to this new one most likely will seem worse in their minds.

And what city hosted the Super Bowl in 2006 and is in the rotation to host it again?
Midwestern parochialism is funny. Indianapolis people's obsession with the "events" their city hosts is funny, too. Indy's OK, but really, besides the Super Bowl and the 500, what about the other 50 weeks of the year?
