Most people, Angelenos and non-Angelenos alike, think the new GaWC list is pretty stupid. Any other such reputable list rates L.A. as a top-tier city including the two previous GaWC lists in 2000 and 2004.
Toronto is a dense walkable city with a huge downtown core packed with hundreds of skyscrapers and thousands of stores and restaurants, museums and art galleries. The city features many unique neighbourhoods packed with victorian houses and vibrant retail strips with interesting, one of a kind shops. It has one of the best and most heavily used transit systems on the continent. It is liberal and multi-cultural and has an incredible pool of creative talent in terms of art, film, music, writing etc. It is Canada's media centre akin to New York in the U.S. In short, the city offers an urban experience that cannot be found to the same degree in L.A.
Los Angeles is not dense and does not have a great public transportation system. Other than that, L.A. has everything you mentioned and more. As far as your assertion that Toronto "offers an urban experience that cannot be found to the same degree in L.A.", care to elaborate?

So it's a stupid list because it doesn't list LA as an Alpha city? But if it did, I'm sure all these people would have no problem with it? Gotcha.

Sort of. Like I just said, the list is considered pretty stupid by most people, but not only because L.A. is laughably low. Chicago is lower than it should be as well, both it and L.A. should at least be Alpha cities, if not Alpha +.
And Portland (I'm from Portland) is on the same level as Philadelphia and ahead of St. Petersburg? I don't think so.
Toronto looks nice but it's not my style so Los Angeles wins by a landslide.
But you live in NYC? Is NYC your style? Toronto is much more like NYC than LA is.
