Some of it is indeed fake. When you're brought up in a predominantly white upper middle class environment and try to act all ghetto/hood, that is fake imo. Trust fund kids who try to act like they have no money and understand the plight of the underprivileged, that's fake. Rich kids from Piedmont who say they are from Oakland and act all hood, fake. Environment plays a role in it in the sense that these types try to emulate being from an environment they didn't actually grow up in.
I agree 100%. There's absolutely nothing real about many of those people.

South Berkeley is hood.

Just because they have dreadlocks doesnt mean they are fake. Have you really spent much time in Berkeley? Most of those kids are brought up exactly as they portray themselves.

Piedmonters don't do that. They are very preppy and/or are soccer playing dreadlockers.

Berkeley for the bay views/sights, the weather, and the beautiful hills. I'd also rather go to a Cal football game than a Harvard one. Berkeley's actual campus is more beautiful too. This is off the subject a bit, but I was surprised to find out that Harvard does not have a Student Center/Student Union building.
A lot of people in Berkeley are not from there, it's a college town.
Doesn't mean they are real either. Yes some will be the real deal and plenty of others will not.
Yeah, I used to hang out there all the time back in high school and go back occasionally when I'm back up home.
Some of them do and I've had personal experiance with this.
okay....just giving my honest opinion about that city based off my personal experiance and observations.
Good points.
I suppose I can't speak for all Berkeley youth(LOL).
But I do recall growing up and being part of sports and other activities with Berkeley kids and they seemed pretty genuine to me.

Well most Bay Area natives are pretty genuine . I know I came down a little hard on Berkeley, it's just not my thing anymore. But it is what it is and Berkeley wouldn't be Berkeley if it didn't have those elements that I don't care for.
