Jacksonville also has the most populated city proper in FL, and 13th in the U.S. with just over 800,000 people, while Miami has just over 400,000. This is proof that city proper populations are meaningless in determining the overall size and "power" of a city. It is the entire metro area population that matters most.
Don't forget that Jacksonville is the largest city\county land area in the State of Florida, but the whole United States. It is 2\3 the size of the State of Rhode Island.
It will be unless more densely populated areas annex surrounding areas. It just goes to show you how silly city boundries are. I think Metropolitan area statistics are much more accurate to the areas size and population.
I thought Miami was the largest city in Florida. When did Jacksonville become the most populated?
Miami is actually quite small. Jacksonville is older than Miami and as it used to be a MAJOR military city a lot of people would get relocated there. Miami is so well known because (IMO) of two factors: one being that it is the southernmost major city in the lower 48 plus it has a major immigration issue with Cuba.
I'm not so sure about population....... Jacksonville has>>>1.2 Million; while Orlando has>>>1.9 Million and Tampa has>>>2.6 Million and finally Miami with 5.4 Million...... http://www.census.gov/prod/2006pubs/...b-06tableb.pdf (metropolitan area population). Maybe you meant city proper; which is an entirely different story.
yeah city proper is what i meant, sorry
