Article from 2006. Georgia's Triangle
It starts with university research centers in the three corners of Georgia's Triple-A Triangle - Atlanta, Athens and Augusta. Out of these cities a number of business incubators have been fostering the early stage development of small biotech companies. http://www.georgiatrend.com/features-business-industry/200612-biotech.shtml

Life-science companies in Georgia grow faster and pay better than most other industries, a University of Georgia survey released Thursday shows. And the biotech hot spots in Georgia lie in Athens, Atlanta and Augusta. http://www.onlineathens.com/stories/042409/uga_432309644.shtml

Georgia Bio, an organization promoting life sciences in the state, and the University of Georgia's Selig Center for Economic Growth released a report in September assessing the sector's progress. The report says there are nearly 300 life science companies in the state, employing more than 15,000, and producing nearly $8 billion in annual product sales. The state ranks 12th in the nation in the amount of venture capital invested in biotech companies. About two-thirds of Georgia's industry is in the greater Atlanta area, with significant clusters also in Athens and Augusta. Charles Craig, president of Georgia Bio, says life sciences is the fastest growing industry sector in Georgia over the past four years. http://www.siteselection.com/features/2009/jan/Georgia/
I would put the Medical District in Augusta behind Raleigh and Houston. I would probably put Augusta ahead of Atlanta and Birmingham.
San Antonio's $18 Billion healthcare industry, 47 institution, nearly $6 billion dollar payroll, 30,000 employee, med ctr is up there ahead of most cities in the south besides Houstons.
Yes there is more than just the hospital component. Quite a bit of research is done at MCG (not to mention the new Cancer Center-where a few of my fellow workers have now started working) It is a medical school as well and a good bit of research is done here. When I was going for my major in Allied Heath, MCG was the only choice in the state that met all the criteria. Heck, our children's medical center receives patients from as far away as Charleston and Brunswick. As for global and national recognition. My graduating class had numerous students from India, China, South Korea, Romania, Jamaica, Ghana, and so forth. I am pretty sure it is known in places other than Georgia.

I seriously doubt that this puts it above Atlanta and Birmingham though. Otherwise, it would be nice to see some stats.
Not even sure why we're still discussing this since it's pretty much been proven that Augusta does not hold the title of "medical center of the South." The general consensus seems to be that Houston has that honor.
