How big is the Bronx? I'm assuming that they'd have 100+ murders a year with the reputation it gets but maybe not. And the difference is that West Palm Beach isn't all low income housing. around 20 murders for a city of 100,000 is bad but not particularly bad. West Oakland has about 30,000 people and had that many in 07, 08 and I think this year.
on city data west palm beach has a murder rate of over 20 i believe, and on Wikipedia it says west palm has a crime issue and a higher murder rate the Miami. so i used that as an example because that whole city has a population of some nabes in nyc which is a much fair comparison.
i need to remember which nyc neighborhood is compared it to. i did this a while back.
idk if this is a better example but irvington , nj which is either the most dangerous city in new jersey or the second most after camden has 60,000 people and Brownsville Brooklyn has 80,000 people and Brownsville usually has more murders then the whole township of irvington.
so the huge population of nyc with over 500 killings does not feel like a few to the people living in areas like Brownsville, east new york , east harlem , south bronx etc.
the murder rate feels few to people who live in better areas.
they stopped updating this in October 2009, the numbers aren't always correct, the NYPD is notorious for not releasing info, but it gives a good idea of patterns.
that map is horribly misguided and wrong. 2006 was 596 murders, 2007 was 496, and 2008 was 524, and 2009 was 471 or 477 i believe.

Read what I wrote under the link....
And remember just because the FBI has a certain number listed doesn't mean the jurisdiction won't go back and change it by dropping/reclassifying cases. Also have to take this in mind, even though vehicular homicides is a vague description.
Quote:
This database excludes vehicular homicides.
But that's probably the best and only map for NYC that will ever be done since The NYPD seems to like releasing numbers and not reports.

cool, thanks for the complete stats (and then some). Would you mind posting a link to where you got the info from?
this site used to have the reports listed ww w.sanfranciscohomicide.co m
found someone that copied all the ones from 1950-2000 while it was still working.
*** Under Uniformed Crime Reports Rules, criminal homicides prosecuted under
California's Felony-Murder doctrine must be statistically reported as either accidental or justifiable deaths.
Therefore, the count of criminal homicides reported to State and FBI will occasionally be lower than the count reported internally.
The unfounded/reclassified numbers are the homicides that did not make the year total.
The LAPD changes it's numbers yearly so it was almost impossible to find numbers that were the same for some years, so I just went with the number that was in the report for the following year.
