Considering the lack of a lot of major retailers and nightlife, I still can't believe people are ranking LA's ahead of SD. Try walking down Broadway in LA at night versus Broadway in San Diego at night, huge difference in terms of feeling safe and secure.

Interesting list...Not sure I agree with Long Beach over LA. LAs downtown is so much bigger, something as to be said for that.
Long Beach number 3? Far from it...
Maybe in the next couple of years when they're done with all the construction and bringing good shopping back downtown,it's very pedestrian friendly I agree with that but theres nothing downtown and everything except one or two big chain restaurants on the water close at 10/11.
San Francisco
Seattle - reminds me a lot of SF in some ways
Portland
San Diego
Los Angeles
Best California Downtowns:
San Francisco
San Diego
Santa Monica - the pier, the Promenade, the beach...this place is awesome!
Santa Barbara - love the consistent Mediterranean architecture and feel
Pasadena
Los Angeles - beautiful architecture, incredible potential, just not quite there yet
Long Beach - feels like a smaller, quieter version of San Diego

That list is pretty old. We are not in 2007, rather 2010. When LA live opened up in 2009 it changed the whole ball game. Plus the new convention center hotel, the JW Marriott hotel just opened up as well, big plus which means more convention space that will help LA to score big time conventions like Comic-Con, that are running out of space.
