I'm wondering if anyone has some advice on which might be better - West Palm Beach, Florida or Omaha, Nebraska? I have a job offer in both cities. The job is very similar in terms of duties, pay (low 20's), benefits, etc. To help, I'm in my mid-20s, come with a dog and an outdoorsy career-minded partner. I like smaller big cities, ie. Madison, WI, Portland, OR . . . sort of big city feel with things to do, but relatively safe to go for midnight walks. I'm from the Midwest and have bad thoughts about roaches, fleas, poisonous animals, big hidden reptiles, etc. I get the feeling they are bad in Florida - is that true? Florida seems exciting, but expensive and a long drive from home. I've been told Omaha feels like a small town, which is very unappealing.
Please post if you can offer any advice or comparisons. Thank you!
I'd agree with Mike. A salary in the low 20's isn't going to get you much in Florida. On the other hand, Omaha does not have the beach nor does it have the warm winter weather. That is a huge factor for me and a good reason why I plan on leaving Omaha in the next few years.
On the other hand, Omaha's economy has been doing great, low cost of living, largely a clean city, and has most big city amenities with a smaller city feel. Omaha is kind of weird in the sense that certain areas feel much more urban than a city its size would typically display, while in other areas feels like a giant suburb.

There are many areas of Florida that you can get a nice 1 0r 2 bedroom for $450-$500 so you could live ok on mid $20's in Florida.
Just not around Plam Beach.

Yeah, I should have specified. I've seen some....let's say 'rough' areas of Florida, too. And obviously things are a bit cheaper inland.
Wow that youtube video showed some impressive sidewalks. Haha. seriously though I used to live in Florida and Cityplace is very cool. Both places are what you think they are. Florida is flashy and a little fake at times but very ritzy. Winters are great, summers are hot a humid. I think weather tends to be exaggerated on these forums. Although summers can be uncomfortable, Florida never reaches triple digit heat but always gets very close. Mosquitos are obnoxious as well as the noseeum bugs. Frequently you have very tiny lizards that get inside your house but they are harmless. They usually just hang upside down on the ceiling. Florida is tropical so bugs and reptiles are part of it. I liked it there but found that I preferred what I consider the real world of the midwest.

Florida IS the real world. It just depends where you go. Have you been to the Tamarind or Northside area of West Palm? Or Riviera Beach, or the C Street areas in Lake Worth, or Belle Glade? These areas are some of the REALEST areas in the US. These areas are as REAL as it gets.
I would pick Florida over Nebraska myself but then again I hear Florida's economy is as bad if not worst then California's is. Florida is where old retired people go who have money saved up. Rent is high I'm sure. Houses are cheaper then they were 6 years ago. Like half the price. but low 20k is poverty level in California terms. maybe you can find a cheap inlaw for around 700 a month. That's about half your take home salerie.
