the city has been described as disney world for adults, which it probably is, but it just takes itself way too seriously
to each their own i guess, i could give a rats ass about half this stuff nyc doesn't have, salmon fishing? wind surfing? save it. i hate laid back stuff, fun in the sun stuff, etc etc..
ny definitely is smooth with a good sense of humor though.
doesn't mean i don't travel or haven't done these things, or do them from time to time, but certainly wouldn't want to live there.

I certainly see the appeal, it just isn't for me. I'd rather live in a shoebox studio in NYC than a mcmansion in the middle of nowhere.

[quote=LINative;14352100]Some of this might seem frivilous but there were some things I noticed when I was a kid living in Queens:

1. No large first class amusement parks in NYC. There are some nearby, especially Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey but nothing in the city like Florida or California has.

puke, I lived in FL for 20 years, I never had a desire to go to Disney World.
would rather have real culture and real life over these fake lifeless places.

2. No large first class aquarium in NYC. There are 5 zoos(!) but the Coney Island Aquarium is on the small side. Nothing like Sea World anyway.

puke, again, amusement parky

3. No water parks at all. At least that I know of. Kind of suprising given the population that could support them. Instead New Yorkers drive out to Long Island or Pennsylvania.

see 1 and 2

4. No trolley cars. I seen the tracks, especially in Brooklyn but no trolley cars.

these are cool but nyc got beyond trolley cars at the turn of the 20th century, millions of people can not be supported on trolley cars.

5. No downhill skiing. The highest point in the city I think is over 400'.

never been skiing, never wanted to

6. No hunting --- legal anyway.

again... see #5

7. Farms. Someone mentioned this but there are still a few, noteably the Queens County Farm Museum.

of course not, its a city. don't want to look at cows.

8. Auto Racing. No racetracks, although years ago there used to be. There was a horrible proposal to build one around one of the lakes in Flushing Meadows but it got shot down.

more redneck ****.

9. No Indian Reservations.... which brings us to

ok?

10. No casinos. There are proposals to put one at Aqueduct Racetrack but not so far. However, I think there is gambling at Yonkers Raceway, which is right on The Bronx and Westchester County line

this is a good thing.

I consider NYC to have the "amalgam." To those less versed in the English language, it means, roughly, "mashed together" quality.

As a result it doesn't have a real anything.

Nature? If you consider parks and sculpted landscapes "nature", sure. Mountains? Nope. Killer views which have a balance of urban AND nature? Nope. Wildlife beyond the random pidgeon, squirrel, and falcon? Nope.

Don't even TRY to compare nature, you're looking like a fool. Just go to the Grand Canyon and see for yourself what NYC is lacking.

Is it a great city to visit? Sure. Does it have a lot of good qualities, sure. But is it "all that"? As a person who's been to London and Tokyo... it's getting there ;-)
Wow (again).

NYC boosters? How about this thread is filled with people pulling out the most random things almost in an attempt to down NYC or just trying to flat out down it such as you seem to be doing.

Person 1: Does NYC have a Volcano?
Person 2: No
Person 1: Oh wow and you guys think you have nature there, just exit your city for once.
Person 2:

Parks & Sculpted landscapes? I don't recall anyone saying anything much about a park, you know there are undeveloped areas in NYC too, it's not like it was just covered in concrete then the grass, trees, parks, islands were worked in at a later date. There's more than pigeons and squirrels too, if you're expecting too see bears and animals like that then you've obviously came to the wrong place (4 out of 5 boroughs are islands/on islands for crying out loud). I wouldn't expect any city to be a zoo.

The Grand Canyon is very very gorgeous but NYC was a city the last time I checked, plus the East has a whole different topography.

As for NYC being "all that" its obvious you didn't particularly care for it with this post, guess that was an attempt at "the final blow". I really don't care if it's all that or not to be honest lol.

It's rare that I have to defend NYC on this site, I didn't like living there but it's still my hometown and some posts are just ridiculous in my opinion.

-There is no gum on any sidewalks I've seen in Tribeca, West Village, Battery Park City, etc.

- Out of 37,000 cops in New York City, not one of them is friendly?

- "Low prices" is subjective. Would need to factor in ones income to determine if an item is low price to them or not.

Does NYC have:

A ring like Saturn?

An entire underground facility like at Disney World to keep the city running perfectly?

Flying Cars?

A climate control system?

Back on topic, I think it's interesting that NYC does indeed have a lot of the things people are asking.

1) Try Times Square...or Penn Station...or 8th Ave....LOL
2) If most of the 37,000 cops you are NOT friendly...then the tiny minority that may be will be eclipsed the rude majority.
3) $10 for a baked potato at South Seaport or $15 for an Appletini at a club.
Or a studio for $1500 a month to SHARE an apartment.

I love New York in June...
How about you? LOL

Does NYC have a country music radio station? A radio station that plays southern rock? Just curious.
