Work has now begun on the $350 million Higbee Horseshoe Casino...This is a restoration of a 1931 department store (opening scene of "A Christmas Story" when the kids are looking in the window of the toy display)

It is also a very urban setting (no parking lot/facing Public Square) and may be the only casino in America connected via (rail and/or at a rail hub for that matter...Terminal Tower.)

That is nuts! Did I read correctly that there will be two casinos, or just two phases for one casino?

^Legally it will be "one," since they will be connected with some sort of walkway or a possible mini structure.

When you look on a map, they are definitely two separate casinos opening and staggered almost two years apart. Shhh...don't tell Ohio law enforcement!

New lakefront living project announced in Cleveland this morning...and from all places...the Cleveland Browns! Private developers would handle most of the $$$:

Check it out--it's going to be a real "Browns Town." I would live here defintely live here. This would be great continued momentum from all the other projects currently under construction (Casino, Aquarium, Convention Center, Medical Mart, Flats East Bank, etc). I give you, new residential! :

Some renderings:

I have never hidden my thoughts on Cleveland. More so in the past, I have never been someone who really cared for it and its layout for the few times that I've been there. It just seemed kind of dirty and crime ridden to me.

However, having said all that, I would have to be completely bias to yesteryears thoughts or overrly judgemental to say that Cleveland isn't doing alot to turn their city and their economy around. I always wonder when LA and Chicago (Chicago more so this year) have finally taken upon themselves to adopting NYC's plan at drastically reducing crime. Now I know that last years statistics for crime in cleveland posted some very good decreases in crime. But why does a city have to be the size of Chicago and LA to adopt what has clearly helped to reduce NYC's crime rate to almost unthinkable numbers. Why can't these same tactics be used for all cities with severe crime problems. I understand many cities don't have the budget to fight crime like NY, LA and Chicago. Having said that they can still make cuts in other programs to impede this.

I think another thing that hurts Cleveland is their long unchallenged reputation. Sometimes and Detroit can relate as well that a city is deemed crime filled no matter what changes have taken place and no matter what projects are enacted to fix the city, it appears never enough. It is very hard for a city who for many years has been deemed dangerous to shake that general consensus. I think many people will unfairly right off Cleveland as a result of this. Even though crime was significantly lower last year. The city of Cleveland unfairly is working against alot of stereotypes.

For example, take Gary Indiana. Not that much has really changed. If that city took a dramatic overhaul and crime reduced dramatically. I still think that the majority of people would still brandish it a dead, crime ridden city. America might be a country of second chances, yet we're still a country of not forgetting. I suppose Clevelands economic woes have not helped to these nasty stereotypes..

Cleveland does have it's share of crime concerns, that's a fact that is shared with most any large city in the world.

Cleveland has made HUGE STRIDES forward though ... this thread is a strong testament to these irrefutable facts.
"Our city has staged one of the strongest economic recoveries in the entire world" ... ranking at a highly respectable # 10 out of the top 50 cities in the US.

Monster.com has recently ranked our city as being the 7th best city in America for those who are seeking employment / relocation.

Yes, we still have our share of woes in this grand old city ... it's rapidly evolving though, and we're emerging brighter and even better than we've always been before!

It is difficult to drop stereotypes. Even the "economic woes" are held in bad stereo type.

For example, did you know Cleveland led the NATION in manufacturing job growth for something like 10 of the last 15 months?? http://www.city-data.com/forum/cleve...ring-jobs.html

Some other examples:

- Cleveland's employment rate has been BELOW the national average during the entire recession and is currently: Unemployment Rates for Metropolitan Areas

- Cleveland crime is down...Murders were down a shocking 25% last year.

- Brookings Institute ranked Cleveland 10th for economic recovery since the recession: Is Greater Cleveland on the economic rebound? A Plain Dealer poll | cleveland.com

Stereotypes are always an extra battle cities like Cleveland have to deal with which makes it just that must tougher.
