Incoming governors warned over rail funds - Nov. 10, 2010

There was a thread awhile back on this, and it seems the news has brought it back to light. Sort of.

Thoughts? It seems like OH sure could use the jobs and money, but it could be a moneypit if no one ends up using it.

Ugh, Kasich is a dictator, not a governor!

I see the logic in both directions. If there's no motion towards statewide rail of any speed, we definitely aren't going to get to high speed rail. I think this proposed project was a step in that direction, not an end.

On the other hand, I can see the perspective of not being able to justify playing around with a cool but unnecessary concept while essential services like police and fire go underfunded.

Rail has a poor recent track record so if I was a fiscal conservative I'd probably go Kasich's direction as well.

Of course a statewide rail systems as opposed to a national one would potentially limit some of the issues Amtrak has (i.e. limited train service wouldn't necessarily relegate mid-route stops to 3am only).

How can he be a dictator already? He has not even taken office yet.

This rail needs to be stopped.

It will help no one and the way they had it set up you would get stuck in towns you are in over and over.

Plus the cost was not going to let many even use it.

Scrap it, we do not need it.

Thank goodness we have a rep Governor back. Strickland has been a total disaster.

Many said that if you were in Cincy and wanted to go to a Browns game that you could use the rail. Not so, if you went to a Browns game and the game started anytime after 2 you would get stuck in Cleveland so any late or overtime game you would have to find a hotel.

I didn't think the train was a good idea. It would only end up being another money pit for the state.

It's unfortunate that we didn't have this same reaction to the real money pit, the interstate highway system...

Any sources or citations to back up how bad the rail would be?

Personally, I think a high speed rail would be nice. The Acela from NY to DC is only about 3 hours whereas driving is more like 4-5 hours. The Acela isn't even all that high speed, either.

They said it was going to be like 6 hours to get to CIN from CLE. I hope this boondoggle goes completely never started. Such a waste! The 46 people who were going to ride it are going to be so mad. This project is like getting money to build a Taco Bell on the moon.

OH or any state can not afford this expense. It is even more crazy if you can drive faster than the train. I really don't see there being much need for Clevelanders to travel to Cinci anyway.
