As many know, the mayoral election is coming up this November and this time it is looking quite interesting to say the least. I for one would like to see a different and fresh face in the mayor position. There are several younger candidates running, which I find to be interesting too. Will they just further focus on the young, trendy neighborhoods such as Ohio City and Tremont or will they focus on the big picture of Cleveland as a WHOLE? I am very interested to see how this shapes up and what kind of direction this city may go. Thoughts, comments, discussion?

I know that Zach Reed and Jeff Johnson are running to unseat Frank Jackson, but they may not win because of their past scandals. They may not even win the primaries. Do you have any issues with Mayor Jackson?

I'm a big fan of Brandon Chrostowski.

What he's already done with rehabilitating Cleveland citizens has been tremendous.

I'll be interested to hear the arguments on both sides. I wouldn't personally vote for someone just to see a fresh face, unless I was convinced they were better for the job than Jackson. Does anyone know much about the "Neighborhood Transformation Initiative"?

So would most of you Clevelanders say that Jackson has been a good mayor?

I honestly don't know, but it seems like he hasn't really done much. there's still crap tons of crime and still crap tons of poverty in the inner city and it's been this way the whole time Jackson's been in office. That should have been plenty of time to clean the city up, but apparently he couldn't get it done...

I'm not sure how we're defining the fabled "inner city," but obviously poverty and crime in Cleveland are the result of social and economic trends that unfolded over many decades, and can't just magically be turned around in 10 or 15 years by a mayor. During his tenure, there has been a great amount of development in Cleveland, and a repopulating of downtown - I don't know to what degree he can take credit for these promising trends or not. Some major projects have also managed to move forward - opportunity corridor, lakefront west project, etc. - things that could've easily gotten mired in inertia. All in all, it seems to me the city is trending favorably, so I will likely vote for Jackson unless another another candidate makes a strong case otherwise. I'm not thrilled by the handouts we keep giving to billionaire team-owners, but I think that's inevitable.

10-15 years should be PLENTY of time to start turning things around, yet it only seems the violence is getting WORSE. Of course I don't have the exact crime/murder statistics, but that is definitely how it seems...

Is there any American city that has managed to "clean up" poverty and crime without gentrifying itself to death and pricing the poor people out? If there is, I can't think of one.
