I really need to know how people feel after living near the beach for a while. I want to walk the beach yet have a nice home....want to be able to walk or bike to coffee, lunch, etc. Want to be able to walk my dogs on the beach at least some of the time.... Which area is best?

tourists get annoying, but that's expected.

well,
you'd probably want a beach town with lax dog rules. most beaches around here are strict about dogs.
Carolina beach and Kure beach have two areas where one can walk
dogs on the beach during summer months.
one being the north end of Carolina beach , called Freeman Park, this will cost you
a yearly fee or a daily fee. if you live there the yearly fee is the way to go.
Kure beach, or rather Fort Fisher south of there , have a free public beach park where dogs are allowed year round and also a four wheel drive area , about 5 miles of beach, this area has
a yearly/daily fee to enter.
I understand that Topsail Island north of Wilmington allow dogs year round.
Not knowing you, I would say that Pleasure Island[ Carolina and Kure Beach]
downtown Wilmington [ ten miles to beach at Wrightsville] or Wrigthsville Beach
are the areas that would suit your wishes.
Wrigthsville do not allow dogs on the beach during summer months.
If you love coastal areas there is nothing to hate about living here , tourist do clog the roads
a bit during summer but they also add a certain 'hum' to the area.
I am sure someone from further north will tell you all about that area as well.
