Possibly moving to the area this year and I am curious how different cell providers perform service-wise down there. I currently have verizon (which seemed to work OK when I have visited) but I was curious how others add up.

Ideally I'd like to switch to virgin or t-mobile.
It will depend on exactly where you locate. Verizon has the best overall coverage, but even it has some non-covered spots if you get out in the country. Coverage is obviously better in the populated cities.
I am in Sneads Ferry, and neighbors report that they get very weak signals from AT&T. I haven't heard from anyone with Virgin or T-Mobile, and I will leave it to you to check their coverage maps.
I live out on Topsail Island in Surf City. I used to have Virgin, which I think uses the T-mobile network. I loved the service, it was great everywhere except out here on the island where I live. Here the signal was weak and easily dropped. When I decided to cut the cord, we had to switch carriers because we needed one that worked at home as well as when we travel. I switched to Page cellular, a pre-paid plan that uses the Verizon network. The signal is great everywhere, but the plans aren't as good as Virgin's. We're on the $12/month plan which works fine for me, but my mom is more connected than I am and she often uses up all her minutes. I have to keep her topped up to the tune of about $5 a month. It's still cheaper than their next level of service, but it's too bad she and I can't share our minutes.
If you're living anywhere else, though, you may be fine with Virgin or T-mobile. I never had problems except out here.
If you are travelling around in ENC, the best overall provider is US Cellular. There are still many places in ENC where this is the only coverage you can get. I believe much of the Outer Banks only has US Cellular.
The best provider in this area is Verizon. US Cellular used to have good coverage but lately has had a lot of problems with both their systems and customer service. I would not want to deal with them.
I also agree with Verizon being the best overall service for Eastern NC. US Cellular is decent too but Verizon is going to give you better overall coverage even outside of Eastern NC, LTE data speeds, and better phone selection.
You could also get by with AT&T.
I personally use T-Mobile but they're not good for data in Eastern NC so I wouldn't use them if I still live out there.
