We are packing up the family and heading to Nags Head on August 30th. I have heard some horror stories about getting across the bridge to the OBX. Are there any hints or advice that would be good to know? We are travelling from the Cleveland, OH area and will be hitting the OBX around 2 or 3 in the afternoon on Saturday, the 30th. Thanks in advance.

Well, you will probably be hitting the bridge at the peak traffic time. Check in time for rentals is usually 3 PM on Saturday. Could you delay your arrival until 5 or 6 in the afternoon?

My in-laws are coming down from Jersey and they are the ones that are picking up the keys. Will coming in a little later make that much of a difference?

Based on my experience living at North Topsail Beach, everybody tries get into their houses at 3 PM and the traffic is bad. So, waiting might make the traffic easier, but you lose a couple of hours at the beach. It's your choice on how much traffic you can tolerate.
If you have a GPS with traffic reports, use that. Otherwise, if you have a smartphone or tablet, there are traffic cameras here: TrafficLand.com -- Outer Banks, NC
You might test the traffic cameras next Saturday. There is one at the south end of the Bonner Bridge.

Thanks for the heads up. We are traveling with a 4 year old and a 10 month old so the less standstill, the better. I was thinking about checking the traffic online this weekend or next to get a feel for it.

Saturday to Saturday rentals in OBX are the worst.........in September from our home, this commute is 6.5 hrs. In the summer, on a Saturday, it can be around 8-9 hours. No kidding........you will have to see it to believe it...........
OBX will be much less crowded that weekend than say in July or even earlier in August. There is generally not stand still traffic going over the Wright Bridge but it can be slow/heavy flowing down 158 and over the bridge. The stand still part depends on which way you go once over the bridge.
Are you staying south in Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills or Nags Head? Or north in Southern Shores, Duck or Corolla? Going to the north has a much higher chance for stopped traffic all the way up and into Duck, once past Duck you are usually ok.
You said you are coming From Cleveland? And going to Nags Head?
If you really are going to Nags Head, you may want to come in from the West on NC 64...you can take the Interstate south through West Virginia and then catch 40 East to 64 East...you are not likely to have any traffic issues all the way in. Coming in from Manteo to the Nags Head area is much easier than coming in from Virginia. I have a family member that took 6 hours to get from the Currituck mainland before the bridge to Duck one time...what should be about 20 minutes.
