My wife and I are thinking about relocating to Wilmington (from Virginia), since I have a job opportunity there. Have never been there, but know NC fairly well, since I went to college in Greensboro. I've heard comparisons to Charleston SC -- would that be a good comparison? Thanks for the info. Also: any advice on areas/neighborhoods/sections of town to avoid when considering renting/buying a house, would be helpful.
Wilmington is a very nice little city with a great deal of character and charm, although I have recently moved to NC, I spend a great deal of time in Wilmington, for business. I especially like the downtown entertainment district.
Housing can be a little expensive depending on your location but I have found the beach and downtown to be the priciest.
I was impressed with Wilmington on my first visit there last year. The downtown area has really improved with its riverfront district, restaurants, riverboat, etc. The drive from the city to Wrightsville Beach is beautiful with
views of the ocean and I ate at a great seafood restaurant on the beach there(Forgot its name!) Lots of nice new shopping centers and it seems like they are experiencing a population boom there(like a lot of coastal Carolina communities). The people were friendly and a lot of ex-New Yorkers live there. There is even an Italian deli!! I visited a friend on Long Island NY recently and it seemed everyone in that small town were planning to move to Wilmington!! It is special, similar to Charleston and even my hometown, Roanoke.
I moved from Wilmington to Charleston. Charleston's many quality restaurants, shopping and variety of attractions leaves Wilmington in the dust. Charleston's historic area can't be beat and has a very active night life.
I just came from down there last weekend and there are signs of growth everywhere. I love it there but it has its on set of problems, mostly the high cost of living and the threat of hurricanes. If you can get past that, it is wonderful down there. Be sure and take the ferry from Wrightsville I believe it is to Southport. That is a great bargain at $5.00 a car load.

I was born and grew up in Wilmington, although I live in Texas now. Wilmington was and still is a nice little city. If you like the beach, you'll love just how close Wilmington is to the beach. There's not a whole lot of entertainment interms of the arts and theater, but they are working on it. Because the city has grown, traffic has grown as well and there are no freeways to alleviate that. Downtown Wilmington is realy nice and yuppish.
