He is the type that stops to help strangers and thinks all people
are good. Not the cautious type . With all that freshman moms have to worry about is being robbed or mugged another thing to add to my worry list.

Try not to worry - Greenville is not a particularly dangerous place It is mostly just a college town surrounded by beautiful agriculture. My sons best friend is going there to ECU as a freshman himself in the fall and we are all thrilled for him. I'll trade places with you, MY son is headed to New York City in the fall!!!

He should be ok - just be careful about the downtown area late at night. Of course, that can be said for most cities.

I concur with the others, Greenville at night, like any city, is not the safest place. And, to be honest, if he is out at night, he should be using the ECU Buses, Cabs, etc. I know of two incidents in the last few years where two guys walking together at night were jumped by groups...so, forget the buddy system...try the group system instead. Also, it would be a good idea for him to live on campus...the halls are locked 24/7, all have security cameras, and RA staff that do four rounds a night, and student staff who patrol outside the halls to make sure all doors are locked. And the ECU Police are an accredited, fully functioning police force. So, I recommend that you all choose to live on campus.

You can also call for a security escort absolutely anytime--when working in labs late at night I would often do this and would highly recommend it to anyone.

While I'm not exactly fond of Greenville, it saddens me to hear of all the crime that seems to have infested the campus area. It was such a nice area 10 years ago--although I know the campus itself must still be a beautiful place to go to school. I miss the tree-filled mall with the cupola.

Your son will be fine - I'd make sure he is where he needs to be during ECU Homecoming Week, anytime they play an ACC team in Greenville and Halloween.
