Are there any people here who collect or trade gems or is it a specific market based only in certain market districts around the world for example in Europe?

There are plenty of folks who collect gemstones, rocks, etc. Google the gem and mineral society in your area. There are also many folks in the lapidary hobby and business, we prefer our gemstones in the rough or nice mineral specimens. I know some folks who have collections that could rival some small museums.

Ok thanks. I'll look around the internet for something. I was recently in an opal mine in Australia and they have diamonds there too. I'd be interested in the diamonds of South Africa also.

Since gems can be extremely expensive, I find myself collecting cabochon cut "semi-precious" stones.

My travels to India, Nepal, and Thailand have been fruitful in adding to my collection.
