The college bowl season starts Saturday, December 18. There are 35 bowls, 70 teams. Of these teams, 14 had 6-6 records during the regular season, 17 went 7-5, and 1 7-6. 32 teams lost at least 5 times during the regular season, 46% of all schools playing in a postseason bowl game. The remaining 38 teams went at least 8-4 or better, just 54% of the total. My opinion is that teams that go 6-6, 7-6, or 7-5 do not deserve a post season bid. 8-4 is borderline, only the best should go imo. Yes I know, it is money that drives the program, a school and its conference makes money from a bowl appearance, but has it all come down to that? In the long ago days of my boyhood, there were only four major bowls, all played on New Years Day; Orange, Sugar, Cotton, and Rose, plus four or five minor bowls played earlier in the week. Teams that had lost more than once rarely went to a bowl, even a minor one. Success was rewarded, and everyone else stayed home. Today, almost everyone goes, rewarding mediocrity. So, too many ho hum bowl games, or is the schedule good for football and its fans?

Some teams do deserve to be rewarded-- even if you think they are "mediocre." Lets look at Baylor-- they haven't been to a bowl game since 1993. It is almost impossible for them to go to a bowl game due to the competition they face in the Big 12. Don't you think they should be rewarded for going 7-5 this season after 17 years of losing? That is an accomplishment.

I agree, I try to watch as many of the bowl games as I can. I'm also glad that Baylor is going to a bowl this year. The best teams end up in the major bowls anyway so nothing is taken away from them by having these other bowl games.
I agree with the OP, I don't understand even the call for a 6 or 8 team PO when nobody can decide on the top 6 teams. There's clearly the time to have even a 24 team playoff with 70 teams playing in bowl games already.
Seriously, you mean to tell me you wouldn't want to watch the top 24 teams in a playoff but would rather watch 70 mostly mediocre teams?
I'll watch all the bowls games I can. However, tomorrow I'll be watching all the Texas State Finals at Cowboy Stadium. And I can guarantee there will be people watching them too.
I think we need one more bowl game. It would match up the two weakest teams in NCAA Division 1 and be called the Toilet Bowl.
