It's very interesting that a Lane Kiffin, not yet 40, can get the opportunity to burn three different bridges at three major programs (1 pro, two college), but men like Kevin Sumlin and David Shaw, each whose coaching and character have been unquestioned and light years ahead, have had more to prove! Discuss......
He offered Lame Kitten a job based on who his dad was/is, based on the fact that the Tampa2 defense destroyed Oakland in the '02 SB. He figured that Lame was bound to have that "defensive DNA" in him.
He was 5-15 as HC of the Raiders.
He was 7-6 -- and how he won 7 games I will never know -- at Tennessee.
So the geniuses at USC thought, "Hey, this guy is a WINNER! He's 12-21 in his career -- let's sign him to a deal!"
Personally, they should have fired him after last year's implosion. From preseason #1 to unranked, six-loss team at the end of the season. Wow, just wow.
Hopefully he lands at a high school somewhere, because that's about his speed.
He most likely understood USC brought him in just to fill in those sanction years. He must have liked the money very much, and his wife probably likes SoCal much more than Knoxville Tennessee.

When your dad is a boffo DC with years and years of contacts, that means it's really easy to network rather than work your way up through the ranks. I mean, if one of my kids followed in my footsteps in my profession, I could likely shave years off their careers with some well-timed phone calls to friends and the whatnot. Contacts matters, no matter what you do for a living.
To me, the bigger idiot than Kiffin was the AD at USC who hired this guy after one really mediocre year at Tennessee to fill one of the top 5 coaching positions in country. And then fired the guy five games into the season. Then has Ed Orgeron (ED ORGERON!) coach for the remainder of the season. Jeez. That guy was an abject failure at Ole Miss. What makes anyone think he'll do better at USC?

From his public persona, I doubt this. I think he's so egotistical that he thinks he's a great coach and got a raw deal from SoCal.
Because A.D Pat Haden fires Kiffen now, the giant hole that USC has put themselves in will no longer get any deeper. Haden will find the right guy to lead USC to national prominance once again. He should've fired him after last season.
