College degrees mean less and less each decade. More people are getting them, and less jobs are waiting for graduates. Since less jobs are awaiting more educated people, having just a high school degree will set you far behind even the eager college grads waiting tables and answering phone calls.

People keep saying, "college is a waste of time, it won't get you a job like it used to." Well, hate to break it to those who opted out, but your chances of landing a job are substantially less than those who majored in even the most pointless of majors.

A college degree is like a high school diploma used to be, necessary but, won't ensure you a job.

A GER only, well, you're screwed.

Ain't nothing that will totally guarantee a job. The best you can do is work hard, have a high GPA, and develop as a person.

It certainly doesn't hurt to get a college degree... Yes, it takes up some time, but you meet a lot of people and build as a person as well.

I agree, college is necessary...but only for the networking opportunities. There is very little that college teaches you that you couldn't figure out on your own by reading books in the library.

The real value of a college education is the access you may have to corporations and recruiters. Like its been said, "Its not what you know, but who you know."

You don't need college to network. I've had a lot more success at the country club than through my colleges.

Have you been observing Europe recently? They aren't much better off. Asia or South America (basically Brazil) would be your best bet.

Last I checked all the new jobs being created were low level service jobs. Not these big shot jobs that require college degrees and pay 30k+/year.

Now people are competing ever more fiercely for jobs that pay less and require more education. Meanwhile college costs are skyrocketing.

I say drop out of college, work any job you can get and in the mean time start busting your butt building your own business. Do consulting work if you have the skills. When you break it down all the employer cares about is hiring someone who can get the job done for a competitive (as in, against the world) price.

and 56k for CS degree? what a laugh. I pay my programmers 5-10$/hr. No benefits and other legal mumbo jumbo to worry about. They all work from India. Also they are all independent contractors so if they give me spotty work I don't pay them until the work is up to my standards. If I did that in the States, I'd have a major lawsuit on my hands which is the reason why I only hire foreign. Its less liability.

Also if your industry has trade shows, definitely attend those. Those places are gold mines in terms of networking opportunities. Also yes, college has lots of networking opportunities but not the best. Country club, trade show, conventions are probably best you can find.

Exactly right. Most colleges these days are just fast food style. Teach you the basics using standard textbooks without going into any detail. It keeps costs down and margins high. Probably the best college education you can get is at a university that does lots of research.

Wrong. College is a HUGE financial investment and thats how you should look at it. With every investment there is risk of loss. If your investment doesn't pay off then you'll be paying off massive student loans probably for the rest of your life. I'd say that is a pretty big financial investment risk. Also it doesn't take up some time, it takes up alot of time. You have to factor in cost of study, cost of commute, cost of extra work to pay tuition etc. Also the opportunity cost of not being able to work full time.
