I'm often surprised as to how many people on the forum consider the school's prestige to be important. What they should be considering is how high the school ranks in their chosen field of study. There are some 2nd-tier schools that are top tier in certain fields, and that's what matters most. Because that's where the job recruiters for that field go to look for future employees. Some of the most prestigious schools in the country fail in certain fields, and are not on the radar at all of job recruiters for those fields.
I am surprise people think where you went UG is important to getting into Law school. With some exceptions it is really minor and may not even be linked to perceived prestige.

probably because most 17-18 year olds change their mind
I looked at school by how I would fit in. What good is it going to a prestigious university if you will not learn there? Isn't the main portion of college to learn and further your personal abilities?
It helps if you plan on graduate school and for your first job out of school. Companies aren't interested in recruiting from average schools.
It helps far more if you plan on working straight out of UG than it does for graduate school. If you know you want to get a graduate degree, for most fields, it doesn't make sense to take on a whole bunch of debt for your Bachelor's.
