Granted we are not all whiz kids, but it is so hard to compete with anything less than a 3.0, I think. I would also contend you should aim for nothing less than a 4.0 in the courses that make up your major, too.

I could always defend the Cs in math and science, because I pointed out I had nothing less than As in English courses (my major) or the Humanities and other languages -- obviously my own strengths.

Question-- if your final cumulative GPA was literally something like 3.99 or 3.98, can you "round" that up to 4.0 when it comes to your resume, or does that count as a 3.9?

Wow, that is really awful and irritating.

When I was looking for jobs out of college in 1993, I was often asked for my GPA during interviewers. I had a low B average at a Big 10 school because I purposely chose a major which challenged me (i.e. not in line with my strengths), and interviewers were VERY rude about it. In retrospect, this kind of fits in with my (current) life philosophy of focusing on your natural talents in order to succeed; still, I don't see why they should been so harsh about it. It's not like I wasn't working my butt off.

Okay done venting...

Default GPA and employment

I have been finished with undergrad for about 3 years. I am on my 3rd professional employment. My resume states that I "graduated from FAU with a BS in..." That is important to employers, but no manager in an interview has ever inquired about my GPA. Work experience, your personality and the degree itself are what matter to employers the most. This is just based on my experience.

As for applying to grad school, now thats a different story. Your GPA and your test score for grad school, i.e. GMAT for MBA is looked at more than anything else.

3.5+ will be fine for any job. However, if you ever do want to go to grad school (and you probably will), then you need a 3.8+. While you are still in UG don't let your GPA slide! Do as good as you possibly can!!

If it's scored like the SAT, 650+ on each section is good, 700+ is better.

My undergraduate GPA was something like 3.4 and I got into grad school, granted this was years ago. GPA is only one part and graduate test scores, your experience and how you answer essays play a bigger part.

True for MBA programs only as far as i know. Very true though for MBAs. Your work experience and how much you contributed to your company and how, and reflecting that in your essays is the most important factor

Why did you even bother to apply to a place if you knew that your GPA was not up to their standards? It would be safe to say that they received plenty of applications from perspective employees who also had lots of physics and advanced math as well as at least a 3.8 GPA. It was not because you were not entitled that you were rejected, but probably because you could not heed this simple instruction.
