I want to got to school to get my Masters in Health Care Management!
My question is is it better to have a degree in Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy and Management, or an MBA in Health Care Management? I am not sure which one will give me more opportunities!
I do not want to go to school, and not be able to get a job when I am done.
Can anyone tell me which one is better, and that has more opportunities then the other?
Part of it depends on which sector you would prefer to pursue. Public health will lead you more to the government side while the MBA will lean you more toward the private. If it were me I would choose the MBA. I know a number of people high up in insurance companies that have that degree. I also think it is more transferable to other fields if need be. After all, it is an MBA at heart. But if your heart lies in policymaking, I would go for the public health degree.
Thanks...yeah I am not sure the MBA classes seemed like it really focuses on the business side of it! The Public Health had a lot more variety of classes on health! I didn't think it would be such a hard decision to make. I am taking my GRE this summer, so I have all summer to think about it.
What do you want to do when your are done? If you know the answer to that, it should guide you. If you want to be a hospital administrator, get the Health Care Management, if you want to work for government programs or whatnot, the public health would be a better route.
I know many rural hospitals and clinics have a difficult time finding qualified administrators so if you are at all interested in living in a rural area, finding a job won't be difficult.
