Next month around Thanksgiving my GF and I will be traveling from Pueblo to Vail. We are driving in from another state so I am not familiar with the area. Are there any scenic overlooks or other memorable places to stop to do this that anyone can recommend?

Google Maps suggests a route of US-50 to CO-9.

Pueblo, CO to Vail, CO - Google Maps

Any help you guys can provide will be much appreciated.

I would say take I-25 north to Denver then I-70 over. Then you could stop at the Broadmore in Colorado Springs as that would be a perfect place for a marriage proposal. I would suggest lunch in the Tavern there as it is nice but not too expensive.

Weather permitting, drive Pikes Peak Highway to the top, nothing like an overlook that's 14,000 feet high. You could take the cog train up and back too, which is found in Manitou Springs, CO.

Not too far west of Pueblo, just west of Canon City, CO, is the Royal Gorge with a suspension bridge over 700 feet high that you can walk across. Quite a sight to see, and there's a ride that takes you down to the Arkansas River, which is also quite a sight.

IMO, forget rte 9 and go a few miles further west on rte 50 to Salida, then turn north on 285/24. Awesome scenery the whole way, especially around Buena Vista, Twin Lakes, Leadville, etc.

I proposed at Garden of the Gods. She thought it was great.

If you choose Pikes Peak please take time and Google. 'altitude sickness'.

My husband took me up to Rainbow Lake , another beautiful locale, and it nailed me.

Having been born and raised at sea level I had never heard of such a thing. Just thought i'd mention it because nobody thought to warn me .

All in all Colorado has so many beautiful and breathtaking places to consider that you might have a hard time choosing just one.

Congratulations!

Yes, I definitely wont be hitting a 14er day one into the altitude, even though I would just be driving up. I think Im going to look for something along the route, maybe near Breckenridge & the Dillon Reservoir.

Is there a reason why you can't wait until reaching Vail? ... there's a lot of nice places in Vail itself ...

No real reason, other than I was envisioning a scenic overlook or something, and wanting to have it completed prior to meeting up with the rest of my family when we get to Vail. What sort of places in Vail do you have in mind, sunsprit?
