What's with all the cracked windshields here? (Colorado Springs, Fort Collins: for sale, real estate)

Agreed... my husband was stopped for following too closely in a caravan in Springfield, CO. He was told he needs to be 2 seconds behind, not 1.4. Valid, but man!


Also can't get over that the East coast thinks the West is socialist. Maybe they think we're all California


I've had a crack across my windshield that began as a small star and spread across the entire windshield when we were up in Denver when my son was born in the NICU- that was five years ago. So backing up what jazzlover says. We deal with it for years.

Even for those of us on the East coast the law states that it either needs to be in the line of sight or be long enough that the windshield is a safety danger to its occupants to be ticketable. So if its not in front of me or the sun reflection on the star/crack is not annoying then I just leave it alone. If it annoying my ins co will send someone out at no charge and fill it in. I've only had one windshield that needed to be replaced and it was cheaper to deal with an independent shop than the insurance supplied shop and deal with the deductable.

If you live in Colorado, ask your insurance agent, about a windshield rider.

I pay $100 to get them replaced.

I have had three done this year, on two different vehicles, I had one done on a Tuesday, and it was cracked again in two days.

Be very careful if you have a star chip and go through the car wash on a hot day.

Yep! A crack will come out of that star and start going. It's happened to me one too many times.

I got pulled over in February for going 10 over. 40 in a 30 zone. I asked the cop if it was okay to get out of the car and show him something. He said sure, I pointed that the sign says 40. It drops down to 30 in two blocks. I got lucky.

We are closing on a townhome in Arvada next week.

Are you driving on top of people, then? I've driven about 30K in Colorado and have only caught one bullseye, which I fixed with a kit. Last week was close: a semi pulled onto 25, and it was shedding gravel, and I caught a nice one, but that was while it was merging and before I moved. It didn't cause damage (except for another tiny pock mark.)

It seems like you must be driving crazy to need so many windshields.

If you drive the "I-70 Sacrifice Zone" from Denver to Grand Junction very much--with all of the idiots on it--you will get a cracked windshield just about every time you drive it in the winter. The combination of traffic, discourteous drivers, and the tons of sand that CDOT uses on the road just about guarantees it. This winter wasn't so bad, from what I hear from the people I know who drive it all the time, because the winter was so mild, the road did not have to be sanded near as frequently as is typical. The difference in places is pretty amazing. In the several years that I lived in Wyoming--and drove all over the state constantly in winter--I never got a cracked windshield while driving Wyoming roads. Come to Colorado every so often in winter to visit family--I'd get a cracked windshield just about every trip.

Thanks for the info. It's probably the roads I take when it gets nasty out that keep me safe.
