Hi all.
Would like to drive from Pasadena, CA to Holyoke, CO on the 8th or 9th of Jan. Any chance in my Volkswagon GTI? Or am I kidding myself? What route would be best? Through Utah to Denver and over or up from Santa Fe NM? Thanks in advance. Hard for me to imagine the road situations since its 75 degrees here....

matt

It's hard to say..... usually the worst highways would be through the Colorado mountains, between Vail and Idaho Springs usually. CDOT usually has the highways cleared and dry, but if there was a recent storm than all bets are off. Your best best would probably be to check the weather forecast right before you leave to see if there are any snowstorms in the forecast for the Colorado mountains, to determine whether or not that would be a plausible route. If everything's clear, I-15 to I-70 would probably be your most direct route, but if there is snow (or potential for snow) I-40 to I-25 would be your better bet (I-25 is usually clearer than I-70 and is closed much less frequently than I-70).

Does the GTI have good all weather tires and front-wheel drive? How much winter (snow/ice/black ice) experience do you have?

We've made many CA to CO and back trips and I would agree with TinajaCo.

Though, even going the southern route, you do still have to get over Raton pass before entering CO. Not as bad as going through the Rockies, but if snowy, you need to be careful.

Car has FWD and normal, good condition tires. Absolutely no experience driving on any ice......

The effects of these two storms will be long gone before then. The road crews do a good job of keeping the main roads clear and deicing. The sidestreets are what tend to be more of an issue.

We've done San Diego to Denver in 15 hours, but we were cooking.

I'd recommend doing it in two days. Stop somewhere inbetween for the night. Going the I-15 to I-70 route, we'd usually stop in St. George, UT for the night.
