Does anyone have any recommendations for camping in the back country near Rangely? I've hiked the area many times. I know much of the area is BLM land camping is pretty much anywhere you want. and I know those back roads get mighty slick and impassible when wet. So I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for places to camp that are vehicle accessible and not too far off of a main road such as Dragon Road.

There's a map store in Denver at Lincoln and 7th I think--get yourself some topos of the area, that's the best you can do, or some BLM maps from the fed center. Also, one of the papers has a weekly column on hiking and you might be able to research old articles on places to go. Finally, call the BLM office in Moffat County to find out.

Yeah, I have all the maps. Last year when I spoke to the BLM they gave me the usual, camp anywhere you want, be care of fires, ... The visitors center in Rangely was of no help as they pointed me to the local in town campground.

From town go north across the river and follow the dirt roads out north up Chase draw. You will need high clearance and possibly 4 wheel drive though. There is a trail that follows the rim where the red light tower is and it is a beautiful view from up there. You can also reach the backside of Kenny Reservoir that way
