Married couple (mid 30s) with a 2 yr. old and 6 month old relocating to Colorado because of a job opportunity. Both of us will work from home but need to be within a 1 hour to 1.5 hour drive from Denver airport. Moving from Truckee CA (6200', lots of snow, great skiing, mountain biking, climbing, paddling, etc.) Pupulation 16K

I have done a little research on the area but getting "real" information from a website is sketchy at best. Any ideas of small cities/towns with good schools/community and in a mountain environment with access to trails/lakes/skiing/etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I have a townhome in Tahoe-Donner. A lot depends on your requirements for housing. Boulder, Golden, Morrison, Evergreen, Conifer all may have housing that fits the bill.

We really want to be within 20 min or so of both a downhill and XC ski area. We also don't want to be in a suburb of Denver. As far as housing requirements go, we would like at least a 4 bedroom / 2.5 bath house. Because we both work from home, we need space for 2 offices. We would like to stay in the 500s but I don't know if that is possible based on our criteria. Thoughts?

Eldora Mountain Resort

Maybe near six mile res (near Boulder), golden gate canyon (near Golden), maybe even Georgetown.

Definitely not a great deal to choose from under $500k with a study.

Try looking into Woodland Park. I think it sits right about 70 miles from Denver, but without knowing to much about where you are coming from, I am not too sure. It is such a beautiful town, definitely a lot of XC skiing around there, and about an hour maybe hour and a half from a ski lodge.

Although, it is about the third of the size.

I've never been to Truckee so I can't compare, but Nederland has just about everything you are looking for. Nederland Area Chamber of Commerce
As a previous poster mentioned we have Eldora ski area a few miles from town, incredible hiking, biking, climbing in Boulder Canyon. Rocky Mountain National Park is an hour away. Indian Peaks Wilderness area is our backyard.
It is a much smaller town though, pop. around 1400, 5,000 in the surrounding area. Boulder is less than a half hour drive. It takes an hour and 15 min. to drive to DIA.

You've got some contradictions going on. You could live in Summit County, which would put you close to skiing, but probably past you 1.5 time limit for getting to the airport. To get closer to the airport, you would have to live on the opposite side of the divide, which would be Georgetown. Housing will be tough there for price and what you want. Now, if you didn't mind driving further to ski, then you could zero in on Evergreen, where you will have more housing choices.

Interesting to read your post, as I have spent the past 2 winters (6 month stays) in Colorado (official Michigan resident): winter 2007-08 Crested Butte & 2008-09 Evergreen/Denver. So now I am going through the decision process of where to land for a real move.

The nordic and hiking gems are found all over the place, from the Front Range into the deeper Mountains. But, when it comes to alpine convenience, it becomes a bit tricker as the I-70 ski weekend commute truly is a pain in the rear. Even with Georgetown the tunnel will be an issue, as the EB traffic often opens up right at Georgetown.

So it really is about what is most important. If alpine is important, especially for short/spontaneous days, living west of the tunnel is key and still keeps you right at the edge of the 1.5 hrs to the airport (depending of road conditions & traffic). Frisco is a great town, with more choices in the nearby Summit County cities like Breck. To have the $600 epic ski pass destinations at your doorstep (to hit Breck, Vail, BC, A-basin & Keystone) is incredible. But the front range weekend drive to ski does blow.

I tried to do the "in between" last year of Evergreen (1/2 way between skiing and the city) and I was bored; so moved into the Denver LoDo district the last 2 months of my stay and really enjoyed. But I am a 38 y/o single guy, so for a fam you may like the Evergreen area -- which is great for outdoor activities.

Sierra, may I ask you about the Tahoe / Truckee area? I have no experience aside from a S Lk Tahoe weekend stay 10 yrs ago, but the area is an option as I am a boater & skier. Love Colorado, but would be giving up my Michigan boating!

Main consideration for me is a place with good people, and a good spot for an unattached professional male in his late 30's to find a nice gal.
