HI! My husband, son and I will be moving to the Columbia area in the next few months. We are moving from Charlotte. What are the nicest areas of town to live? We want to buy a small home with room for our dogs and 2 year old. We are used to being close to shopping and entertainment.
If anyone has any advice, please share!

Wow, that's pretty open-ended. There are a lot of nice neighborhoods to choose from, both in the city and in the suburbs. Do you have a price range in mind for your home and a preference for older vs. new? That would make it a lot easier to recommend a neighborhood. I've got pictures of some of the neighborhoods on my website:

I agree with waccamatt. That is pretty open ended. There are lots of nice areas here that is close to shopping and entertainment. Particulary the northeast area has been growing rapidly. There is a town center out that way that is fairly new and has just about everything you can think of. You can find houses priced as low as 120k up to over 600k depending on the subdivision. It would depend on what exactly you are looking for in an area (older vs newer area, price, etc) Hope that helps.

I have been here for about 10 months, live in the NE around a place called " Villages at Sand Hill" one of the nicest area of town, and not much traffic, easy drive to town, my wife works downtown and it only takes her 30 mins to get to work. Do try to stay away from the Irmo area, it is a nice area, but traffic can really suck around the I-26 / I20 interchange

Wow VAS is a nice place to live. You won't find any place in town that is more convenient to that kind of shopping.

If you want some shopping, but not the major stores like in Northeast Columbia, then I'd suggest looking in the Shandon area and vicinity- perhaps Rosewood, Devine St or off Beltline in the Forest Acres area. Maybe Good schools there, and some shopping is nearby at Rosewood & Devine and also along Garner's Ferry Rd. Five Points is also nearby shopping, dining, etc). It would be a lot more convenient for working downtown.

I live in NE Columbia closer to I-77 at Farrow and Clemson Rd. and it's about a 20 minute commute. Not bad when compared going out to St. Andrews and Irmo. Traffic is bumper to bumper on 20 and 26 but I have never seen it bumper to bumper on 77. There are alot of nice neighborhoods closer to downtown too

I love the Village at Sandhill. I would live over there if I stayed in Cola. (I just visit often)

We live in the Summit, way in the back by the church, I work off of I 20 and Main st, takes me 25 minutes to get to work leaving at 7:30 am
My wife works downtown on Gervais st across from the capitol she drives down 277 everyday and will get from our house to her office in 30 mins.
Now if you stay off of hardscrabble you can make some decent time. We take the easy way Summit pkwy to Clemson, left to I-20 and I 2o to 277 for her and I 20 to main st for me, and yes 30 mins or less

NE is growing and the two worst roads are Two Knotch and Hardscrabble, but there is all the shopping you need within 20 mins everything from Walmart to Pennys

atleast the city is limiting water permits in the NE to stop some of this out of control growth and let infrastructure catch up!
