Lots of folks will be happy about that. I like the location they selected. That vacant store space has struck me for some time as a wasted opportunity.
Perfect spot. They took some time to do their due diligence and nailed it with the demographics of that area. I had heard a year or so ago that Costco was coming there. I've got them pegged more for Richland Mall, though.
It's interesting how the Whole Foods spokesperson said they had been hearing from Columbia people for years, and now they've selected an in-town area with good schools that are sought after by people moving back into the city. It's clear they didn't want to locate in the outskirts, but that the in-town location has taken a while to reach their demographic tipping point. Best of all, that whole swatch of land is going to be completely transformed. Great deal!
And in case anyone's wondering... the location is a straight shot for me to shop.. quick & easy..
Darned! It's still not showing up in their stores under development section on their website.

Great news. It's about time they came to Columbia. Glad to see it will be located just outside of downtown and in a re-utilized shopping center. Reminds me of another Edens & Avant redevelopment project here in Greenville where they put a Fresh Market in the heart of the city instead of the outskirts: Edens & Avant - Our Centers - Center Detail
great news...less than 10 minutes from my house so I'm happy! I agree w/Carolina, that building has been an eyesore since Kroger up and left 3 years ago, so glad that space will be utilized again...one downside is, the traffic at that intersection (Devine/Crosshill/Ft. Jackson Blvd.) is probably going to be a mess...hopefully city engineers can figure something out to keep it from getting too bad.
Awesome news! While some stores sell products found at Whole Foods Market, none of them achieve the same overall high quality (very cosmopolitan) atmosphere and level of support for local/regional farmers. Everyone in SC should be pleased every time another Whole Foods store opens in the state.

Not to derail, but I'm curious: Do you have data to back up that claim (the latter, since the former is pretty subjective)? Earthfare, for example, seems pretty plugged-in to local and regional suppliers, and stores like Rosewood Market are certainly more local all the way around.
I am now pulling for a Harriss Teeter. I loved Harriss Teeter. They opened 3-4 new stores in Charleston within the last year or so.
The Teet? It's okay, but not so different from Publix. If we're pulling for mass-market grocery stores to open around here, I'd take a Lowe's Foods before a Harris Teeter. But different strokes!
