Columbus has no national rep like Charlotte,Indy,or New Orleans.

it never has,and it never will.there is nothing wrong with that, either.

as for Coleman,he wants a lot of things.he even wanted to be governor at one time.

More importantly, look at the population trends, the Columbus area is gaining about 20,000 people a year while Cleveland is losing 10,000 a year. Look, I'm not saying I think the NBA is coming to Columbus anytime soon, I don't think it is, but things change, and 10 or 15 years from now, who knows.
If you would take time to read what he said:

It's not about MSA (that's something the census bureau uses to keep tidy stats). It's about media market size and population density
And the Cleveland MEDIA market is not the Cleveland MSA. It is the Cleveland MSA, Akron MSA, Canton Massillon MSA, Warren Youngstown MSA, for 3.8 million population; as well as most counties west of Cleveland. The Cleveland MEDIA market is probably 5 million people or more.

And these 9 pages are all a moot point anyway. The Cavaliers will have (and use) veto power in any decision on an NBA team in this part of the country.

its sad that northeast ohio is losing so much population.i love the area, columbus is in a much stronger position, and will be even more so as the future unfolds,in 25-50 years will cleveland have 3 major league teams and columbus only one?if there was no anti trust exemption in major league baseball do you think the pirates would still be in pittsburgh instead of a city like columbus?columbus will pass pittsburgh and could pass cleveland in msa in the next census,we all realize that the northeast ohio region is still alot more heavily populated than cbus or cincy, but by 2050..will the cleveland csa including akron be larger than columbus csa??nothing i have read says so

Charlotte has a national rep? Columbus is bigger than all those cities and metros. Even here in Mexico, people know Columbus. If you wanted to argue that Columbus did not have the reputation and name power that larger cities have, that would be a fair assessment, but for a mid-size size, it's right up there with the rest of them. And "never" is a very long time.

Coleman has accomplished quite a bit of the vision he set out in his first term and continues to think ahead. An NBA team is not going to be in Columbus' near future, in all likelihood. He was just establishing an expression of interest if the NBA ever expands again or a team decides it wants to relocate.

Hypothetically if this did happen, what would you guys call an NBA team in Columbus?

Hopefully something a bit more inspiring than the "Blue Jackets."

Ah, but reading would make it so they would have to acknowledge a fact. Anyone with a map and half a brain can see the huge amount of skew in the MSA numbers in this state. If the numbers were registered by radius or economic influence, Cleveland would have over 4.5 million people in the same land area as C-Bus or Cincy. That's why Cleveland has and can support 3 major sports franchises.

Media Market Households:

Cleveland - 1,524,930
Columbus - 925,840
Cincinnati - 915,570

It's not even close.

Btw, if it wasn't for OSU, Columbus would likely have another franchise. The NBA, MLB, or NFL is not going to try to upstart in a smaller media market with a huge college sports presence. I'm actually a little surprised that the NHL did.

This isn't about Cleveland. There are other cities with more than one team that are similar or smaller than Columbus. That is far more relevant to the discussion at hand. Also, OSU only would play a role in football. All other major league sports would see much larger attendance than their respective college teams, and already do when it comes to soccer and hockey.

OSU: 4,261
Blue Jackets: 15,165

Soccer, average attendance per game, 2011.
OSU: 1,084
Crew: 13,929

For the record, these same years:

OSU Basketball: 15,125 (2011)
OSU Football: 105,278 (2010)

OSU is clearly a football school, and pro sports are, on average, several times more popular than in any sport other than football.
Interesting data.
