I've been reading the regulations for obtaining an Ohio state drivers license, and you have to take the written test even if you have a valid out of state license. I moved to Texas for 3.5 years and I'm now returning to Ohio. Does anyone know am I still responsible for taking the written test since I lived here before and had a valid Ohio drivers license? It's difficult to find the time to take the test, then get the license when they're only open a few hours on Saturday and not past 5/5:30 on weekdays. Thanks

Yupp, you have to take it. I had an Ohio license then got a KY one. Well, ended up moving back to Ohio about 30 days after changing my license (just my luck) and I had to take the written test to get my license back. It's asinine and a way to get money if you ask me since you have to pay to take the test.

You don't have to take a written test anymore with a valid OOS license. At least I didn't when I got my Ohio DL in March this year.

They did however mess up my name and I didn't notice until my bank pointed it out. That was not fun!

I can't find that in writing anywhere, but call them. I'd actually wanted to study for it so I'd know if any rules were different from NC, and was surprised when they said on the phone I didn't need to take a written exam. When I got my DL, I picked up a DL study book just to look over laws here.

lol Well maybe they realized it was a stupid rule. I admit I did this in 2009 - just assumed the laws hadn't changed.

We had to take our written test over when we moved from out of state, that was about a year, maybe two years ago.

This is also related to the immigrant status in the country and the type of license they hold. If you hold a non transferable license between states, then you have to redo everything in each state you move. Many temp workers coming into the country has to redo tests in each state.
