Well, like I said. I live out east so it really doesn't bother me either. And I go to the Staples, Target and Walmart there quite often. But if it does bother you, that would be a good thing to know before you buy property don't you think?

Whitehall is pretty cheap... one of the cheapest suburbs in the county. The city, I believe, offer first-time home buyers incentives, so that can help with housing. It does have a reputation for crime, but overall rates are on the decline just like almost everywhere else. The violent crime rate was 686 per 100,000 in 2013, which while still somewhat high for a city its size, is way under what it used to be. It was over 2,300 per 100,000 in the mid-1990s.
500 people could essentially be a rounding error. The Census Bureau uses modeling to assume a growth rate (positive or negative) but actual counts are done every ten years. I've seen it happen in other locales during decennial censuses: the Bureau's estimates are effectively reset and actually showed a decline when the real count was taken.

The +500 could be close to the actual or it could be off. Point of the post is not to hang onto the intradecennial estimates like gospel

Actually, while estimates are not exact, they almost always are correct in the actual population trend. So while it's not likely that Whitehall grew by the exact estimate, it's very likely that it IS growing in population. The only times that population estimate trends tend to be wrong is when cities challenge the decadal census figures. For example, Cincinnati challenged the 2000 census results and had estimates inflated artificially high during the 2000s because the Census tends to accept figures provided by these cities in challenges to their counts. When the 2010 census came out, it proved that the challenge was wrong. And for the record, Whitehall's population decline has generally been slowing for awhile now, so it's not inconceivable that it's growing again, not when Franklin County and the Columbus area are growing so fast. Between 1970-1980, Whitehall lost 3,988. Between 2000-2010, it lost 1,139. Population trends can change very rapidly and definitely within a decade. It's a fair bet to say that Whitehall has probably at least stabilized.

3 killed this evening. A murder suicide last week. No other suburb in Columbus has that type of crime.

Apartments near Broad and Hamilton. That is really the only bad area and that's where all the bad stuff happens.
