Visting Cbus what should I see? (Columbus, Cleveland: appointed, chapel, transfer to)

Hey again all!! I recently posted Help please ...Cleveland or Columbus? //www.city-data.com/forum/colum...-columbus.html

Well sometime soon I'm going to go visit Columbus since I've never been there and I'm really excited. I am definetly going to go tour OSU because I want to go to school there I should probably check out the school. But what else should I do/go see? I know basically nothing about the city so I dont know what to see or do..! thanks!

Well...there's nothing to see in Columbus! I've lived here for 11 years from Cincinnati. All I can do is look forward to moving away. As any honest Columbus resident will agree, this is one of the blandest citys in Ohio with no natural beauty and the only thing (the only thing) people talk about is the buckeyes. Around here, these people think the whole world loves the buckeyes. However, if you drive 100 miles away from Columbus, you will find that no one cares about the buckeyes.

Don't go to school at OSU. It's an enormous weed-out school that you will spend 6 years at to receive a 4 year degree. You will be disappointed and wish you had not chosen to live here. There are two great schools in Cincinnati to chose from and they are rated on academics unlike OSU; UC and Xavier.

Gee, Globack, you must really like that city 'down by the river'.

I have to respectfully disagree with those comments. I think there is a lot to see in Columbus if you are really interested. I will agree, however, that Columbus is not a 'vacation destination' city, but it's a great place to live and raise your kids.

Lmao at UC=Academics....I think of all the guys who get kicked out of school for football at other schools who happend to transfer to UC or the Huggins days when guys collective gpa was below 2.0 as a team...please, thats almost laughable.

Columbus is what you make it. I lived in Detroit, DC, Houston, Chicago, and Seattle and the only 3 cities would I consider right now (austin/chapel hill, cbus) because the cost of living and the large creative classes.

Do you mean as in Austin, TX? I haven't visited Columbus before. My wife said that it had a bit of the Austin feel to her during prior visits.

What you might want to see in Columbus depends on what interests you.

I agree that Columbus is scenically bland and culturally probably a little backward, but that matters much more to some people than to others. It's in the geographical center of the state, which means that it's built on a plain. Very flat. Easy to get around in, because most non-suburban streets are laid out on a grid, but topographically dull. There is a very good metro park system, though:

Being in the center of the state also means that it's a cultural mix, neither markedly progressive, like Cleveland, nor reactionary, like Cincinnati.

Columbus has a small-city feel, though with just under two million people in the metropolitan area it's only a little smaller than Cincinnati (which has a semi-big-city feel left over from the days in the last two centuries when it was an important national population center). Cincinnati and Cleveland proper (excluding their metro areas) have fallen on hard times, having lost much of their population in recent decades, but Columbus continues to grow, though at a leisurely pace.

I agree that there's not much to look at on the Ohio State University campus. It's not pretty -- just lots of nondescript brick buildings. It is an important national university, though -- I wouldn't knock it academically, unless you're comparing it to the premier national schools.

I've heard there's a nice zoo in Columbus, but even though I'm a Columbus native I haven't seen it in a long time. Here's the web site:

German Village is a pleasant place to walk through and eat:

But remember, Columbus is not a tourist destination. Just a pleasant place to live, with a relatively low cost of living.

With the new projects that are going on around town, it should only add to the entertainment factor in Columbus.
