I currently have a Toshiba Satellite L305 that is beginning to fall apart. The power cord pickup is coming undone (after spending $75 to resoder it.) I'm tired of throwing money into this laptop and would rather replace the thing. Plus I want more battery life and a 17" screen.
I'm currently considering three models to buy in a couple of months.
Acer/Gateway is not much better ... in other words, they're not so good either.
That Sony ... find out whether it's a 17.3" or a 15.6" as it's noted in the description. Either way, 3500maH is a very dinky battery; don't expect much battery life out of it. The processor is lower-end for these days, and if your intention is gaming ... forget it.
Reliability ... Asus stands out. They tend to be higher performing machines too, so yeah, you will have to stretch your budget. If you can, look into this one: Amazon.com: ASUS N61JQ-XV1 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown): Electronics
Drawback is very short battery life (like an hour); that's the tradeoff for an i7 quad-core processor that's has over 2-1/4 times the performance of the processors in Sony or the Acer.
Circuit City has the Toshiba Satellite L675-S7062 Intel Core i3-370M 17.3" Notebook Computer w/ Blu-Ray Reader for $649.99 Free Shipping after Coupon Code: XWE14884 (Exp 12/15). Tax in TX, IL, NC, FL, GA, SD, ID.

He said he'll be playing SimCity. The last one of those released was like 7 years ago. That laptop can handle SimCity4, no problem. For the record, Sony's are my go-to brand, with HP coming in second.

*CoughBScough*. Asus makes some of the cheapest computers around. They make great motherboards and some decent video cards. Whole machine assembly? Not so much. They are a lot of headache. And their service is legendary....legendarily bad.
Laptops don't need quad-core processors, either. It's a waste of power and energy unless you're building a gaming rig, and that's not what this machine will be for.
My brother said his old style 19" monitor finally died so I went out and bought him a 20 inch HP flat screen on sale for $99. I figured for the price it should be at least decent. If he doesn't like it or wants something bigger and better, I can use it. My old monitor is on its last legs, too.
