Ok..I have a Toshiba satellite laptop...about a year old. Everything was fine till about a month ago when I was using it..set it down, came back and the screen was black. It was still under warranty, so I sent it in and Toshiba said they cant fix it because my powerjack was broken...which happened earlier, but I glued it in and it worked fine. Anyways, they gave me the runaround for about a month...never answering or returning calls, and when I did finally got through told me it would cost $175 to fix the jack...which needed to be fixed before they could fix other stuff, I just said send it back. So...I got it back yesterday and hooked it to an external monitor and it works fine like that. I know it could be my lcd screen, but could it also be something simpler that I could do myself?
Thanks
No display is usually one of 3 things, a bad cable (not likely), and bad inverter (powers the backlight), or a bad screen. None of these items are all that hard to replace, the problem is figuring out which one is the problem if you don't have spare parts to swap in. Personally I think you should have paid to get the jack fixed so they would cover the screen problem under warranty.

Yeah, its a long story of many hours on hold and no one ever answering....and no one returning my calls or e-mails. I was just trying to find out why they couldnt fix my screen, because even though the little jack that you plug it into was broken, I had repositioned it and super glued it...so it was solid and worked fine. They sent it back saying they couldnt get ahold of me...jerks..
Probably within their rights under the warranty as it was modified, pretty much any warranty for anything would be voided if a hack job repair was done. What model is it, can probably find a pretty cheap screen for it if you want to give it a shot.

Lots of choices for that model, the 15" screens are cheap, 16's are expensive. Bliss Computers - Search
Best thing to do is disassemble the screen housing and get the part number off the screen itself.
It may not be the panel itself, but just the backlight, or even more common, the inverter for the backlight. To check, shine a bright light against the screen when it's on ... if you can make out the image, then it's not the LCD panel.

Ok...cool. I shined the light...and I can see the images. So how do I know which one it is?
Thanks!
You can't know without swapping parts, it's likely either the inverter or the CFL's inside the LCD, if you want to roll the dice the inverter is usually cheaper than the LCD panel.

Don't you miss the days when CompUSA existed and had certified techs that worked on laptops in-house under warranty?
