My poor cousin in the Philippines bought a 1500 peso computer - AMD Duron 1.6 ghz, 480 mb memory, 29 GB hd. 17" lcd monitor extra. Webcam and speakers free from family.
- This gets by all their internet browsing, net games, and Facebook! Funny how they've been happy with this computer! And when I do Skype with them, this computer is good enough for Skype Video Webcam chats!
So how about you? Do you have a weaker computer that gets by? What do you do with it?
If it's not saddled down with Windows and its overhead, it's more than adequate.
Besides, folks buy netbooks and nettops these days, and look at how much computing power the Atom provides ... or rather, doesn't. FWIW, the single cores are on par with Pentium M processors, which came out in 2003.

I just got an Asus Netbook to replace a 6 year old Sony ultraportable. The Asus has a dual core Atom N550, 2GB RAM, 250GB hard drive, Win7 x64 Ultimate. The Sony has a Pentium M at maybe 1.1Ghz, 1GB RAM, 40GB hard drive, and WinXP Pro. The Asus runs circles around the Sony. A huge factor in the difference is the faster RAM and hard drive on the new computer as those have been the bottleneck for a long time, not the CPU.

Indeed, but the CPU still played a factor. The dual-core Atom in the Asus is more powerful, and moreso comparable in performance to the later Core Duo CPUs.

I wouldn't go that far. The C2D E6600 in my 4 year old desktop smoked my Netbook on SuperPi.
I forgot to add that my cousin's computer runs on integrated antique S3 video... No video card and this is good enough for Skype webcam chats!
So any minimal computer such as this will provide basic internet needs. Makes me think building a basic computer with any mb that has integrated video will be good enough.
He runs Windows XP.
