I have a fairly old computer (6 years) with a power supply that was recently replaced (about 2 months ago.)

After I moved to a new home, it started rebooting randomly about once every few hours.

I opened it up and nothing was disconnected.

The CPU and computers didn't feel particularly hot and all the fans were working.

Where do I begin the troubleshooting regarding these random reboots, giving the above facts?

While overheating is the most common cause, there are probably 10 other things that can cause it, including a virus. Booting from the recovery CD and then running diagnostics can sometimes fix or identify the problem. Most common on some computers especially HP laptops is a faulty heat sink. The computer reboots thinking it's overheating though it's not.

On a whim, I upgraded to an experimental kernel (this is a Linux system) and no random reboot so far.. we'll see if this was the problem..

I would blame RAM as the most likely culprit, if overheating and the power supply have been found "not guilty." I would swap out the RAM if the problem re-occurs with the new kernel. If the problem persists with new RAM, the CPU and/or motherboard are pretty much the only other possibilities.

So far, so good.. (I'm using the Ubuntu 12.10 "Proposed" kernel.)
