I'm looking for a couple of inexpensive laptops for my grandsons (ages 9 and 10) - They can be hard odn electronics , but, enjoy videos, basic games and have some school-related assignments and links. I was reasonably proficient w/computers before retirement (10-years ago), but, have not kept up with the market.
I'm thinking about refurbished, windows 10?, 2.0 Ghz, 4GB Ram, 80 GB HD, bluetooth and there seem to be some on EBay in the $125 range.
I don't have kids, but am a computer nut, so I have a slightly different perspective.
Instead of getting them a new but cheap laptop, consider asking around for one that's been 'retired'.
Pass the word across your friends and co-workers that you want an old, usable but unused laptop.
I myself have two laptops that are in perfect working condition, but run WinXP and are too limited (CPU speed and RAM) to upgrade to 7 or 10. Because of this, their market value (eBay or selling to a friend), is basically $10.
It's a race to see if I find someone to just give it too, or the next time I carry a load to my local electronics-recycling drop-off.
For for a kid who just wants to play low-performance games, and learn how to type and Facebook, email, and generally become computer proficient, such would be perfect ... and disposable. If they spill juice on it or let the cat shed on it, it only has to last a year or so, then replace it. Do this until their school gives them a tablet or they actually have needs for a more powerful machine.
I went ahead and combined the above recommendations, buying a couple of newer laptops with a little more RAM and higher end operating system. I avoided the detachable keyboard because of concern it would just be something else to lose/break. I wound-up paying about $115 each, plus bought the Square Trade Warranty on ebay. -- I appreciate your input!
