I don't have to live in East Windsor(just need to be near the area) as the job would have me all over the area.(If I get it)

Where would you suggest we live?

We are a small family with 1 11 yr old son. He plays travel basketball.

We would rent for awhile.

Anyone have any suggestions? Can you live in other states? Etc....

Enfield and Windsor Locks are affordable and convenient. Ellington, Suffield and South Windsor are more desirable IMO, but not as affordable. Out of all those towns, Enfield and Ellington offer the most rental options. There is a new development in Ellington called Deer Valley Townhomes. It's phenomenal. 1 bedrooms start at $1,325 I think.

You could also look across the river in Windsor.
If you want very good schools I'd look into Suffield, East Granby, South Windsor and Ellington.
Windsor has good schools as well. I personally would avoid living in East Windsor itself though, as I grew up around that area of CT and the towns school systems leave much to be desired.

Granby is also a fabulous town to raise kids. The schools are great. That's where I grew up and my family still resides there, with all my younger siblings still going to school there. They love it. It's a quaint, quiet town with natural beauty and nice people. And it's not that expensive either. There are two major grocery stores in town (Stop & Shop and Geissler's). The commute to East Windsor would be anywhere from 20-40 min, depending on where you live and work. Some people don't like it though, because it's semi-rural and you have to drive a bit out of town for major non-grocery shopping (usually to Simsbury or Enfield).

Suffield is similar to Granby, but even closer to East Windsor. Only problem is that it has no major grocery stores (if that's an issue for you). There might be a little more airplane traffic/noise too, because the airport is right by there.

I think we could use a little more information. how much can you spend? What type of town would you like? How important are schools? I would generally recommend considering Granby, East Granby, Suffield, South Windsor and Ellington. These are near East Windsor and have good schools. I have heard East Windsor itself has issues with its schools but I did find people there to be very nice. You asked about living in another state. Massachsetts is not far but with so many great communities nearby I would not travel any more than you would have to. Jay

Suffield has a Highland Park Market in the center of town that a lot of the people use. Also Enfield has major stores and borders Suffield...short drive.

Highland Park is smaller than Geissler's and Stop & Shop though. I heard it's pricey, too.

We could spend up to 2,000 / mo on rent. The type of town....although we prefer big city life....as long as it was close driving that would be ok.
Good schools are #1. Especially for academics and BASKETBALL.

Most of the towns mentioned are smaller and quieter. You might want to move closer to Hartford to get the big city feel. The nearest larger town would be Enfield but its schools generally perform under the state averages in the Connecticut Mastery and Connecticut Academic Performance Tests. West Hartford is probably the closest to what you are looking for. It is about 30 to 45 minutes from East Windsor. Jay
