Not true. I -want- to work part time in retail. They're not hiring. They all have signs outside saying "Hiring now!" but when you go in to apply, they say they're only accepting applications and have no openings.
I can't stress enough how helpful recruiters are. I went on a handful of "real" interviews out of college and couldn't land anything so I contacted a headhunter in Stamford who worked very hard to get me interviews with management at mid-sized companies (financial, law, and marketing). It took about 2 months of going on interviews 2-3 times a week before I got a good paying job (where I still work now, though I have very little work to do during the day and waste time on CD!) DM me for the name of the company I used if you're looking for a job in Fairfield County.
One of my colleagues also said that having a very well written resume on monster.com will get a few legitimate companies in your area to contact you for the first few months after the resume is posted.

Retail outlets change employees like their shorts. Today might be different than tomrrow. It's like anything else, if you are smart, create a system that allows you to canvas and be organized...you'll get in.
Maybe they are just saying that to you.
